Share the Simple Love!

I am on a quest to find and share the Best YouTube Workout Channel, right from the Living Room of my Simply Healthy Home. This week we are looking at the Youtube Channel of Heather Robertson, whose workouts are tough, varied and interesting.

Let’s get into the nitty-gritty (emphasis on gritty!), shall we?

Heather Robertson’s YouTube Success

Boasting of over 2 million subscribers and a whopping 600+ videos, you can bet Heather Robertson’s Youtube Workout Channel is good!

I really, really enjoyed this week of doing purely Heather Robertson workouts.  In fact, I wanted to keep doing her workouts for the rest of the month (ha, I said that in this review of Eleni Fit‘s channel…I wonder if I will say it about all my Youtube Workout Reviews?)

Heather robertson has a lot of strength based videos
There’s a reason she has 2 million subscribers.

The reason why I feel like I could keep following her workouts for a month is because Heather has an amazing channel, with lots of variety. Her workouts are perfect for Busy Mamas: do-able yet still difficult without sending you into a tail spin.

Perfect for when you don’t have much time but still want to test your limits and burn some calories!

I think Heather Robertson’s Channel has been my favourite, so far, because I like to leave a workout feeling like I worked out (otherwise, that was a waste of an hour!). But I also want to have enjoyed doing it.

Heather Robertson’s workouts really achieve this balance. Let’s see how she stands up to my review!

Workout Length Variety

For me, a YouTube Workout Channel must have different workout length options. I am an erratic person, in that some days I cannot commit to a 45 minute long session, and have to break it up into 10 or 20 minute slots.

Heather Robertson has a great range of workouts at various lengths.  She has lots of 30- and 45-minute workouts, but a good number of 20- and 10-minute ones so I can do my favourite 3-2-1 method.

She doesn’t have many 1 hour workouts, but the one she does have is awesome.  I have gone back to it a few times now, when I can commit to that!

These various workout lengths are awesome for busy mamas who have different pockets of time here and there and want to squeeze a workout in. Have 30 minutes? Heather has a toughie for you! Or only 10? Heather’s got you!

The score I gave Heather for Her Workout Length Variety: 8/10

Workout Style Variety

A Youtube Workout Channel, to get me subscribing and keep me going back, must also have Workout Variety. You know what I mean: walking options, Pilates, HIIT, dance-style and more.

Heather Robertson’s favourite workout style seems to be HIIT. Within these workouts, she provides a lot of movement combinations, which make the minutes go by quickly.  The other genre she does well is Pilates, with lots of careful movements which really challenge your muscles.

Other than these two main genres, there is not much else. However, I find that within these genres, the movements are quite varied so one HIIT or Pilates workout will still look quite different to another one.

The thing is, of her 600+ workout videos, you’re bound to find one that suits you to a T.

The Score I give to Heather for Workout variety: 7/10

Workout Intensity

Another important thing the BEST Youtube Channel needs to have is a variety of workout intensities. To go back to that channel on my off days, they need to have gentler workouts. But, on days when I’m thirsting for a challenge, the best YouTube Workout Channel will ALSO have a video for this.

Heather Robertson has a great range of workout intensity, and has workouts suitable for beginners, intermediates and experts alike.

She has really challenging but achievable weighted workouts.

Her easier workouts still push your body in the form of strength and/or balance. Sometimes on the days where you feel you can only do the “easy” workout, it still feels good to have used your body in some way. Therefore I like it when “easy” workouts still push you out of your comfort zone. Heather’s do.

Score for intensity: 10/10 (because it’s good-for-you intensity)

Pregnancy Friendly

Pregnancy is not the time to stop working out. Remember that you have the birth to prepare for, as well as the recovery period. Being fit helps with this, as you need your muscles to work and have endurance.

YouTube has a lot of “Pregnancy” workouts, but in my not-so-humble opinion they are lacking.  There are some channels (like Eleni Fit and Olivia Lawson) that have workouts you can do for the whole nine months.

I would say that for the most part, Heather Robertson’s workouts are not exactly pregnancy friendly. She does not have many all-standing, walk-only workouts. Her low-impact workouts have a lot of core exercises which involve being on your back. You could probably do some in the first trimester, but in general I would steer clear.

Score for pregnancy-friendliness: 4/10

Video watchability

The Best Youtube Workout Channel will have easy-to-follow video layouts.

User-friendliness is a big factor of enjoying your home workout.  Does it have a progress bar at the top of the screen so you can see how much of the workout is left?  Can you clearly see what the next move is going to be?

Heather Robertson’s videos do not always have a progress bar, but I find that because she mostly does circuits (5 exercises, 2 rounds, for example), so I know what to expect and do not miss the progress bar.

She does have a dominating black background, which does look modern and professional, but it is dark and sometimes it is tricky to see some previewed moves.

Best Youtube Workout channel - good video watchability
Sometimes the dark background can obscure the move

Don’t let this put you off though – you do get the jist and her workouts are worth it!

Score for watchability: 7/10

Favourite Move

Heather Robertson’s favourite move is the Crab Dance! She loves this one – I think it was in every workout I did this week!
