DIY Cleaning Products

When you have only $100/week to spend on groceries, it is very difficult to buy the toxic free cleaning products without overspending. The cheaper stuff is often nasty, and I do not want any of that contaminating my house! I have young toddlers, so to me, it is crucial to keep my home as natural as possible.

Recently, I discovered that there are so many cleaning products you can make yourself, using simple ingredients that you have to buy for your pantry, anyway! I knew you could make all-purpose cleaner for surfaces and such, but I had no idea that you could make your own dishwasher tablets, washing powder and dishwashing liquid!

It was so exciting to come across these recipes that are free from chemicals and have super-cheap ingredients.

1. Dishwasher Tablets

Homemade Dishwasher Tablets from Earth Friendly Tips

We go through a box of 50 dishwasher tablets about every two months. That’s $22.50 per box (New Zealand dollars), which adds up to about $135 every year.

However, If I buy 4 simple ingredients, I can make my own, for a fraction of that price. These ingredients are versatile, meaning they can be used for more than just dishwasher tablets. This is a big win for the Homemaker on a single income.

In fact, you’ll probably be able to make a lot of other household cleaners from these four wonderful products! These ingredients are: Washing Soda, Baking Soda, Citric Acid and Salt. Here is a simple recipe for homemade dishwasher tablets.

2. Dishwashing Liquid

Made from just lemons, salt, and water, this dishwashing liquid from brendid.com is non-toxic and super cheap to make – especially if you have a groaning lemon tree!

3. Laundry powder

We go through a 4kg container of laundry powder once every 2-3 months. For $20 (New Zealand Dollars) a pop, this adds up to $80-$120 per year.

Here is a recipe for all natural, low toxic laundry powder that is made from cheap ingredients (except the essential oils, which aren’t super necessary). You can absolutely slash your annual grocery spend by making your laundry powder from scratch.

You probably already have these ingredients on hand!

4. All-purpose Cleaning Liquid

With just two handy ingredients, you will have a clean, spring-smelling home! This All-Purpose Home cleaner can be distilled in a one-to-one ratio with water for all your cleaning needs.

And the two ingredients you will probably already have: White vinegar and citrus peel. Yes, citrus peel! I love the way this recipe uses up a by product and makes such a worthwhile and effective use for it!

Simply collect and save all those leftover citrus peels, pile them into a jar, top them with vinegar, and leave to steep for 2 weeks. How easy is that??

5. Soap

This handmade oatmeal soap recipe uses just three ingredients to make a low-toxic, all natural soap bar.

I love the many different uses for oatmeal. From this nutritious, ancient grain, you can get milk, breakfast, cookies, bliss balls, and even cakes! And with this recipe, you can even clean yourself with it!

It truly is a wonderful and versatile product.
