Share the Simple Love!

In this article I am sharing the 10 BEST Prep-ahead Sourdough Recipes for your Christmas Breakfast.  These breakfast ideas are all able to be prepped the day before, so you don’t have to lift a finger on Christmas morning!

Christmas Breakfast

In my mind, Christmas morning is the best part of the day.  The day is new, and the excitement of it finally being here is fresh and at it’s peak.  There is still the rest of the day to look forward to, with all the goodies and treats to unwrap and eat.  But, so far, no stress or mishaps have happened.

The beauty of Christmas morning needs to be preserved as much as possible.  I want to enjoy the magic of Christmas without the bother of the mundane, everyday chores.  For me, that means no cooking or cleaning other than the superficial stuff.

I want to have a steaming hot cup of (sweet and creamy) coffee, and cuddle next to my boys as we read the story of Christmas and unwrap the gifts.  I want to sing carols, and get dressed festively for the day.

But then, Breakfast.

Christmas Breakfast is a conundrum (pa – rum-pum-pum-pum), because it NEEDS to be lavish and decadent…but I do not want the fuss and bother (and DISHES) of making a large feast.

Hmmm.  What is a Simple Homemaker to do?

Enter: Sourdough.

Sourdough Recipes are a REVOLUTIONARY idea for preserving the magic of your Christmas morning.  Anything made with Sourdough HAS to be prepared the days before baking.  So, having a sourdough-based breakfast will not only be (a tad) more healthful, BUT it will mean all you have to do is bake the dish.

Wa-la!  Breakfast is served.

No hovering, no flipping, no mixing, na-da!  Just bake (perhaps while you are opening presents) and enjoy.

The other benefit of doing all the prep for Christmas Breakfast the day before, is NO PREPARATION DISHES on Christmas Day itself!   That will cut the cleaning up duty in half.

So what are these magical Sourdough Christmas Breakfast Recipes?  Prepare to be amazed and tantalised!

Baked French Toast From Sally’s Baking Addiction

Sally’s Baking Addiction is a wonderful blog for tried-and-true classics. This Baked French Toast recipe of hers will utilise that day-old sourdough bread you may have lurking in your pantry. Think of it like a breakfast bread-and-butter-pudding. The soaking liquid is a light custard, which is poured over the diced bread.

Prepare the pudding the night before, then all you have to do is bung it in the oven on Christmas morning! No need to batter and fry individual pieces of toast (I’m ALL about ease on a busy Christmas Morning!)

Sourdough Bagels

My Sourdough Bagels recipe is so delicious and easy to make. No kneading required, and the batch can be made all in one day. Bake them on Christmas Eve and serve them for Christmas Breakfast with your favourite toppings.

I love cream cheese, salmon, berries, and maple syrup on my bagels.  Have you ever tried Peanut Butter and Sauerkraut? It’s SO delicious!  Don’t knock it till you’ve tried it!

Sourdough Pastries for Christmas Morning

Pastries are such a perfect thing to have on Christmas Morning, since they are a once-in-a-blue-moon kind of thing.  Decadent and delicious, but oh-so-technical to make, you just cannot be bothered at any other time of year.  But at Christmas, a time for feasting, it is the perfect time for giving pastries a go.

Most pastry recipes take days to prepare, even without the sourdough element – but it’s just fun to use your Sourdough in this way, and makes the pastries a tiny bit better for you.

Another benefit of having pastries for breakfast – they are pretty clean eating!  No, not THAT kind of clean eating…they tend not to require much more than a lovely side plate, and a knife to eat.  Easy clean up, eh?

Let’s cover some of my favourite Sourdough Pastry recipes:
