Share the Simple Love!

Let’s be honest, it is so hard to feel chic when you’re pregnant. Between the hair loss and the swelling feet, not to mention your growing belly, it can be hard to accept your new appearance. The great thing is, there are things that you can do to look in the mirror, and like what you see. Enter: your maternity capsule wardrobe. Clothes can make or break your confidence, so it is essential to build a maternity wardrobe that helps you to celebrate your pregnant body and love the skin you’re in. Here’s 10 key items to create a chic maternity wardrobe that combines comfort, style, and practicality.

1. Maternity Lingerie

Let’s start at the bottom, shall we? Lingerie plays a major role in comfort, and giving you the right shape. A good bra will make your breasts sit right, and give you the support you need. Your lingerie will effect how your clothes sit on your body and can be the key to making your whole outfit appear more flattering. Be sure to chose a variety of bras that have the correct straps for whatever clothes you intend to wear, because of the golden rule (to never show your bra straps!). I love a good sports bra for wearing T-Shirts, but these wouldn’t work with dresses that show my shoulders. Aim for at least two sports bras and two “nicer” bras that work with your other clothes.

2. Comfortable Leggings

Leggings are a maternity capsule wardrobe must. Get them in different colours to jazz things up a bit and make you feel peppy.

Stretchy leggings that accommodate your growing bump is a staple in your capsule maternity wardrobe. They are super versatile and can be mixed and matched with other pieces in your wardrobe. Leggings are not only super comfortable (which is key for accepting your growing body), but they make your legs look toned and shapely. They keep you from looking totally frumpy, and give good support to your growing belly.

3. Boyfriend Tees

Don’t you just love blue and white stripes? This boyfriend tee is french-chic, and will give you that crispness. A slouchy tee that won’t make you look frumpy!

Basic boyfriend-style tees are another top recommendation for your maternity capsule wardrobe. Boyfriend tees are super flattering – they make you look super tiny, especially in the arms and shoulders. Made to be loose, there’s no need to buy maternity specific tees. Just go for super large, and enjoy the ensuing comfort!

4. Oversized Sweaters

Oversized sweaters make you look cosy and cute, and you’ll probably wear it every day (weather permitting). A definite maternity capsule wardrobe must!

Oversized knits, cardigans, and sweaters are a maternity capsule wardrobe staple that can be easily paired with leggings, jeans and maxi-skirts. Large, roomy sweaters and knits balance your growing bump by adding a bit of adorable bulk up the top. They look so cosy, and not frumpy at all when paired with a tighter-fitting bottom piece, such as a bodycon skirt or leggings. Plus, loose fitting pieces won’t make you feel self-conscious. Don’t be afraid of the stigma of sizing up – if it looks more flattering, then wear it boldly!

5. Smock Dresses

A smock dress can be worn all pregnancy long, and even post-partum! This style is super flattering and is a comfortable way to look chic.

If you’re going to add a dress to your maternity capsule wardrobe, my favourite style to wear during pregnancy are smock dresses. Smock dresses are usually loose fitting, so you don’t need to pay extra for a “maternity” version. I dislike buying maternity-specific dresses, as they tend to have limited fabric and colour options. Smock style dresses work well with a pregnant body and you can benefit from the choice of mainstream clothing.

6. Anything Denim

Oversized denim shirts make you look tiny and waif like, and are ultra comfortable.

I love the structure and stability of denim during pregnancy. While mom jeans, denim shirts, dresses and dungarees are super cute, comfortable, and flattering. Denim, in whatever form, looks smart and can be dressed up or down. It is comfortable to wear round the house and transitions nicely to going on errands in town. My particular denim recommendation for a maternity capsule wardrobe is an oversized denim shirt. An oversized denim shirt can be worn at all stages of the pregnancy, and layers well with leggings, linen pants, and bodycon dresses.

7. Maxi Skirts

A bodycon maxi skirt just makes your bump look super cute. It’s flattering, comfortable, and goes with anything!

Maxi skirts are great for adding a touch of elegance to your maternity wardrobe. Choose styles with empire waists or adjustable waistbands for added comfort. I absolutely adore the look of a tighter fitting maxi skirt with a french-tucked denim shirt (like the one above). It looks so chic, and is super comfy! Maxi skirts look amazing on a pregnant body and layer well with oversized t-shirts and jumpers. They’re a definite must in your maternity wardrobe!

8. Statement Accessories

A jaunty headband looks so adorable, especially crowing a pregnant body!

A pregnant body is universally celebrated, so use this time to have fun with eye-catching accessories. No one will grudge you for going the bold, because pregnancy is such a special time. Elevate your maternity outfits with statement accessories such as scarves, headbands, belts, and stylish handbags. These accessories can help add personality to your look. If you’re feeling self conscious, accessories can also draw attention away from your bump. They’re just great for tying looks together!

9. White Flatforms

White flatforms make everything look cool – and they’re super comfy, too!

My favourite footwear for pregnancy has got to be the crisp white flatform sneakers. These shoes are super comfy, and look great with any outfit you create from your maternity capsule wardrobe. They make leggings look cool, skirts look fresh, and just make you look ultra polished. They’re a definite maternity capsule wardrobe staple! To accommodate your swelling feet, slip-ons are fantastic. They also look smart and are super comfy. Opt for comfortable footwear like flats, low heels, o

10. Confidence

Confidence makes all the difference between blending in or standing out.

The final thing that your maternity capsule wardrobe cannot do without is confidence. Wearing your maternity clothes with confidence is the one thing that will turn you from drab to fab. Feeling comfortable and confident in what you wear is the most important aspect of any wardrobe, maternity or otherwise. So, embrace your changing body and celebrate your new curves and the fact that your amazing body is growing a new little human!
